The tiered white wedding cake became a tradition after Queen Victoria's wedding, with elaborate decoration made in icing on a very English fruit cake. Many modern weddings still follow this trend, or perhaps veer slightly away from tradition with a chocolate or vanilla cake, different coloured icing and decorative flowers. Some may even go further and commission a quirky, novelty cake representing their favourite things, or play with the amount of tiers or way the cake is displayed.
But if you aren't fond of cake, or just want to be a little bit different, there are lots of alternatives to having a wedding cake, from cupcakes to candy, ice cream to cheesecake! All it takes is a bit of imagination. Often these alternatives can even save you money, or are possible to do at home yourself.
Here are just a few ideas to help you find your perfect wedding cake alternative:
Cupcakes - A very popular trend at the moment, cupcakes are cute, dainty, already in individual portion form and can be decorated in any colour or design you can imagine! They're also very easy to make, so if you feel confident in your baking, or know a friend who makes gorgeous cakes then they can be done very cheaply at home. You can then match your cupcakes to your wedding theme or colour scheme, and double them up as favours in little boxes for guests to take home. For display, pile them up on a series of cake stands for a spectacular look.
Ice Cream
A nice idea for a summer wedding is to have an ice cream bar, with a variety of flavours, toppings and sauces so that guests can make their own concoctions for dessert! You could even hire an ice cream van for the day, for a fun childhood treat.
Sweets and Candy
A range of cookies, truffles and sweets will please any guest. How about offering a selection on each table, or filling a display table with a variety of different confectionery. A hot trend at the moment is going retro and going for all the tastes of the couple's childhood. Like cupcakes, there are probably some aspects of this choice you could do yourself, such as cookies and biscuits. Fudge is easy to make too, and can be made in many different flavours.
Cheesecake
A popular choice and a lovely light alternative to cake. Cheesecakes come in many forms - chocolate, vanilla, fruit, baked or chilled - and can be beautifully presented on tiers or in mini-cheesecake form.
Croquembouche
A croquembouche is a French dessert that is traditionally served at weddings, first communions and baptisms. It is a pastry-dish made from profiteroles or choux balls filled that are piled into an impressive cone tower. The choux are usually filled with cream or chocolate and drizzled with caramel. A croquembouche can also be decorated with chocolate, ribbons, folowers or almonds.
Petit Fours
Petit fours are a selection of delicate little confections, cakes, biscuits, meringues, pastries and macaroons. They are dainty and pretty and usually decorated with fondant, icing and chocolate. You could offer a variety of different petit fours, or stick to one type, such as macaroons, which can be piled into stunning multi-coloured towers!
