A wedding seems incomplete without someone in charge of the music. Have you been to a wedding reception where there was no music? There are different instances when a DJ's role is most important-for example, during dinner and when the couple is dancing. The DJ should create a comfortable atmosphere by playing the right songs at the right time. An experienced wedding DJ can pick the right songs even during spontaneous parts of the wedding celebration.
There are different kinds of DJs in town, and you probably are only familiar with radio or disco DJs. These people play popular tracks and disco/hip-hop beats. A DJ for wedding receptions should be flexible, meaning they should be able to play music for various types of audiences.
A wedding may be attended by people of different ages. Some of them may enjoy old school music, while some of them relish new music. Hence, the disc jockey may have to play different types of music to satisfy everyone. In many cases, the DJ should know who the guests would be so he can prepare an appropriate playlist. The guests may request some songs, so the DJ should be prepared for that too.
The attire of the wedding DJ is important in any type of event. If a wedding reception is going to be held in the evening, it is most likely a formal event. Guests come to a wedding reception not to hear music primarily but to watch the celebration of the bride and groom. Then again, fine music adds color to any event, so someone has to be in charge of the music. The best thing that a DJ does during weddings is to set the mood of everyone by playing the right songs.
In some cases, a master of ceremonies may still be needed in addition to the disc jockey. There are certain types of wedding receptions when a DJ alone could not lead the proceedings. For instance, in religious or somewhat formal weddings, dance music may be inappropriate. Hence, the DJ may not be able to do much to entertain the crowd. An MC would most likely set the mood for a formal reception, while the DJ plays soft music to make things run smoothly.
Wedding entertainment depends partly on the couple. The couple's choice of music shall dictate what the DJ should be playing. Hence, wedding entertainment isn't solely based on the DJ's discretion alone, unless the couple gives that freedom to the DJ.
