Wedding Bands As Statements - Why Not Try Something Different?
Wedding Bands As Statements - Why Not Try Something Different?
By Sanjeev Bhadresa
Traditionally, engaged couples have sought out matching wedding bands, but there is a growing movement of couples who seek to mark their vows in a more personal way. As men and women often have different needs, different rings have become a popular choice.
When selecting his and hers wedding bands, it's always an option to match either the style or the metal, while giving each partner a unique twist with the other characteristic. For example, instead of choosing matching stainless steel wedding bands, some couples may wish to have both rings made of the same metal, but add diamonds or a unique design to the bride's ring.
The other option, matching the style but not the metal, may work for couples who prefer to wear different metals. Most people have a preference for jewelry made of a certain metal. It doesn't make sense for the couple to both wear sterling silver wedding bands just because one partner only wears silver! If the bride prefers yellow gold and the groom prefers silver, it's worth exploring rings that come in the same style, but that have been made with different metals.
This can be an especially valuable choice when one partner works with his or her hands. While the bride may be content to have a lustrous, but less durable, white gold ring, the groom who earns his living as a mechanic may wish to go with the stronger tungsten, cobalt or stainless steel ring. This way, the needs of both partners are addressed.
Couples who are especially unmatched in their tastes may discover that they don't need the bands to match at all. There is really no problem with this. After all, the fact that there is a ring on the ring finger at all is enough to indicate that a person is married. It can actually be a fun way to learn more about each other when you're shopping for different rings. What sounds more fun: arguing about styles or giggling about each other's choices? You can turn your shopping into a bonding exercise simply by accepting that you each have different preferences.
The days leading up to a wedding can be full of stress, and putting unnecessary emphasis on perfectly matched wedding rings can lead to fights that do nothing to strengthen the couple's bond. Instead of adding this extra worry to your pile of responsibilities, consider talking about what each partner really needs and wants in a wedding band and using that as your guideline while shopping.
I hope that your wedding day is a truly momentous one and you and your fiancee find his and hers wedding bands that last a lifetime!
